Fished Eagle for 2 full days. Water temp 47, air temp at sunrise 26 and heavy fog both mornings which made float tubing interesting! Lake is at lowest level since the 1940's.

Between my buddy and myself we landed over 25 fish with lots of 19 inch + and a few fat 3 pounders. None of the usual 4-5 pounders that Eagle has to offer but we had a great trip and came home with some fillets that were smoked the next day.

Free Casting Lesson

Hi GBF Members Rick Radoff is pursuing his FFF Casting Instructor Certification, and I am working on my Master Certification. A good part of the testing measures the instructors ability to communicate with the student in terms of identifying faults and suggesting corrections and improvements in an understandable manner using the standardized terminology of the FFF casting program.

To help us hone our communication skills, Rick and I will be available for one-on-one casting lessons of approximately an hour in length. We will be available on Saturday morning, November 7, with one session at 9:00 am and the second at 10:15.

We can take four students for this Saturday, and four the following Saturday, Nov 14.

It is by appointment only.

There is no charge for this lesson. And this is not a program where you get a free introductory lesson, and then pay for more later. You can obtain follow-up instruction at our clubs casting clinics which are all free.

Your current level of expertise is immaterial; the only limitation will be that it is instruction for single handed rod techniques. No two handed spey will be included, unless you want to learn single handed spey techniques.

Horseshoe Bar Preserve Veterans Event

I would like to say thanks to Mike Howes, Bill Carnazzo and all the GBF members that participated in making the Wounded Veteran's event at the club a great success. I cannot thank those who participated enough for their help in the recovery process these vets are going through. The changes we saw from the time they arrived until the time they left was dramatic. The stories we heard and shared were overwhelming and difficult to listen without becoming emotional. At the dinner in Forest hill hosted by the American Legion and VFW being able to watch the vets from WWII, Korea & Viet Nam share stories was very moving. The veterans all expressed their deep gratitude and appreciation in our welcoming them back and helping them in their recovery.

*Coming November 8th to the Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room in Chico is an incredible film documenting the origins of steelhead fishing on the North Coast of California. "Rivers of a Lost Coast" follows the lives of two legends of steelhead flyfishing in their efforts to outsmart the fish and each other.

This will be the only showing in the area. Hurry and get your tickets at the Sacramento River Preservation Trust, 631 Flume St. in Chico, or Fish First!, Sierra Stream and Mountain or Chico Fly Shop.

This showing, hosted by the Friends of Butte Creek and the Sacramento River Preservation Trust and sponsored by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Chico Area Flyfishers, is a benefit to support the Friends and the Trust. The filmmakers will be in attendance at the benefit and will have the DVD for sale. $10 of every DVD purchase will be donated to the Friends of Butte Creek and the Sacramento River Preservation Trust.

Description

At the turn of the 20th Century, a handful of pioneers carried their fly rods into California's remote north coast and gave birth to a culture that would revolutionize their sport. For a select few, steelhead fly fishing became an obsessive pursuit without compromise.

Leading the pack was the mythical, Bill Schaadt, an off-kilter angler famous for his ruthless pursuit to be in the fish. The new endeavor was ruled by a demanding, unspoken code, which made 'breaking in' almost as difficult as 'breaking out'.

By the early 1980s, the Golden State's coastal fisheries found themselves caught in a spiraling decline. As California searched for its disappearing salmon and steelhead, these men foraged for their souls.

Saturday, Nov 7th - Red Sesbania Removal

Our next workday for Red Sesbania (Sesbania punicea) removal will be Saturday, November 7^th. We will meet at Rio Americano High School's (4540 American River Drive) parking lot at 9:00 am (From Fair Oaks Blvd, turn south on Saverien Dr - this dead-ends into the school). Plan on working until around noontime. Lunch and water will be provided. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO CAN WADE! We will be focusing on the actual island that is inaccessible during high water flows. Flows are scheduled to drop to 1,800 CFS by 10/17. We do still need a few people to go along the north bank where weve been working, but our primary focus will be the island this month. Bring WADERS and/or rubber boots, long sleeves and long pants. Shoes that can get wet/muddy are preferable (or wading boots), as we will have to get in the water to reach these areas. So far, I have the following signed up:

Davis Lake WOW

I fished for 5 straight days at Davis Lake....and my wrist is hurting....It was fun fishing with everyone that i fished next tooo....if you missed this fall fishing at Davis Lake you missed a GOOD ONE.....water temp. 53 degrees in the afternoon on Sat.....duck season started on Sat.....and a lot of fish moved off the flats???......if you move around you will find the fish in 1ft. to 6ft. just ask Scott V.

My best friend convinced me to do a little fishing last week. I fished Lake Almanor down by the dam, no fish. I fished Butt Lake, no fish. I fished Manzanita in Lassen Park, no fish. I fished Egale Lake and caught one fish. It was good to have a change of scenery for awhile, weather was superb, just wish the fishing had been a little better.

Went to the Apline county area today for a quick trip to check out a stream that feeds the w.f. carson river. Small stream, but there is little brookies in it up to 10". Landed 2 of them, had a few other bites on the drift. Perfect little stream for someone with a short rod (7' 6" or 8') rod in a 4wt. I used pheasanttail and hares ears in a size 18. The fish were hiding under rocks, under cut banks, in the current and in front of the head waters. Clear stream, no one else fishing and a nice hike. The stream is out of eye sight from the road. Hike up stream for a 1/2 mile and few brooks here and there. There was no one else fishing it.

Davis Lake 10-9-09

We fished Davis L yesterday first time. Caught lots of 18 to 22 inches. using Green Damsel and black Wolly with silver metelic slow (very) stripping.

HBP Wounded Veteran's Event Postponed

We have decided to postpone the Horseshoe Bar Preserve Wounded Veterans Event at the club due to weather. There is a very large storm that will arrive on Monday and we decided it would not be safe for these seriously wounded veterans to try to get around in the hazardous conditions.

Thank all of you that have agreed to help with coaching and logistics for this event. Once we are able to chose a date for the event we will notify you in hopes you can help out with making this a memorable experience for them.

Davis Lake report 10/2

Bill King and myself squeezed into John Peterson camp site for 3 days of insane fishing before the weather chased us home. The fishing was crazy.... almost anything worked, indicator fishing, floating line, slime line, bank fishermen using rainbow power bait .... you had to match the line and fly to what the trout were doing....we found them on the flats in 1 ft. water.... off points.... in the channels around the weeds beds. Water temp. was 50 degrees and falling sooooo don't wait. We all hooked some big fish....but Bill landed a very bright 24 incher.
